Tabling
•	Reminders to those who signed up. Alicia will bring cookies for the McMahon tabling Wednesday.

Budget
•	The SEED officers allocated money for snacks, 5$ a meeting
•	Money for advertising, printing, t-shirts, mugs
•	Money for projects: stickers for light bulb switches, light bulb parties.
•	Gretchen brought up that last year the research on the number of light bulb switches was done.
•	There is an opportunity to buy fair trade t-shirts from Central America in a big batch with other campus organizations. SEED decided to be part of that. The shirts can be screen printed or otherwise decorated with the club design.
•	Members agreed to pass the budget.

Garden
•	We are waiting to hear back from the grounds department contact.
•	Ariana has heard of a successful example from UBC
•	Alicia knows about a farm project in the works here at UW, will forward the information to Ariana.

Compost
•	Ariana and any interested SEED members will meet with Michael Meyering and Kathy Hanken in Kathy’s office to talk about composting for food scraps and recyclable plastic alternatives or spudware.
•	Taterware will not be accepted at Cedar Groves composting.

Plate Day
•	Ariana will see Kathy Hanken on Friday.

Climate Justice Summit Re-Cap
•	Ariana and Brianna went. There were about 150 students from all over the northwest. This was a positive, interesting experience. If any SEED members want to have a similar, more expansive experience, they can check out SPROG, another Sierra Student Coalition event in the summer.

Campus Climate Challenge Coalition
•	This is a coalition for UW clubs with an interest in climate change. Because of the wide-ranging effects and causes of climate change, most clubs have a connection to it. SEED could be the residence hall link for the coalition, and the light bulb exchange would be our first project for them.
•	SEED members decide to be a part of it.
•	People who know any clubs with connections to climate change should invite them.
•	The next meeting is Monday at 7:45 in the Lutheran Center, which is on the Ave between 41st and 42nd. SEED members should go if they can!

RHSA
•	HFS gave a presentation on the increase of 5% in their rates and on the new dining levels.
•	Winterfest is this week.
•	Clive from HFS talked with Brianna about Green Tag energy. He wants to talk more about why HFS doesn’t buy Green Tag energy, and if they should consider it. (which SEED thinks they should, of course)

11)	RHSA Report
12)	Announcements
13)	Advertising business

Plate Day Counts
•	We need to get the total customer data from Kathy Hanken to see if the percentages of people eating on plates were increased for the plate days.

Compostable Dishware
•	Currently the Taterware (phase one of the plan to switch to compostable) is in the process of being approved by the compost collector for UW, Cedar Groves. We can move forward as soon as this is done.

Garden
•	Nothing to update yet.

Young Democrats
•	This group has asked SEED and other groups if we’d like to help them in a campaign to reduce the use of paper/plastic coffee cups, and instead promote re-usable mugs.
•	The campaign has the slogan “sustainable is sexy” and they want help with apparel, mugs, and outreach.

Global Warming Contest
•	National Wildlife Federation Campus Ecology program is holding a contest for college campus groups to hold outstanding programs to reduce the climate changing effects of their institutions. Called “Chill Out!”
•	SEED could connect this to the light bulb switching project (from incandescent to compact fluorescent in dorms)
•	To enter, a blurb should be written by February 29th and entered at the website, or a film can be made by March 1st and entered at U Tube.

RecycleMania
•	Pat Kaufman has invited SEED to help out with outreach and volunteering for this program.
•	The program is a competition between the northwest rival schools and a couple hundred colleges across the country in recycling and waste tonnage. For a 10 week period starting in mid February, UW will measure paper, cardboard, cans & bottles, food waste, & waste.
•	SEED should set up a meeting with him.

Light Bulbs
•	Ariana contacted the HFS link for the light bulbs about a time-line, and they are still in planning. Ariana will meet with them next week.

Vote to Rank Projects
•	Zero votes to make Sustainability is Sexy a SEED priority.
•	Zero votes to make the Global Warming contest a SEED priority. The consensus was that a blurb could be written by one person closer to the deadline.
•	Gung-ho (essentially unanimous) support for helping out with Recycle Mania. This program should translate well into residence hall outreach.

Valentines Day
•	We are tabling next week. Tabling sign-up: In McMahon on Wednesday, Ariana has signed up for the 11:00 to 12:30 shift, and Anna has signed up for the 12:30 to 2:00 shift. In Eleven01 on Thursday, Gretchen has signed up for the 11:30-12:30 shift, and Ariana and Brianna have signed up for the 12:30-2:00 shift.
•	SEED will also have a modified Earth Club brochure for the table. Ariana, Anna, and Gretchen will work on this before next meeting, so it can be approved then and copies made.
•	Demos: SEED members at the meeting made posters with sustainable Valentine’s Day ideas. We will also have something tangible to have at the table. For the idea of baking cookies instead of buying chocolate, SEED members will bake treats to have at the tabling. Tim, Thea, and Alisha have volunteered. If they cannot bring to the tabling they can bring to the SEED meeting on Tuesday.
•	Other ideas/posters made: Buy a re-usable coffee mug for coffee lovers, romantic walk to dinner (instead of driving), get a Valentine from Earth Club, save energy—turn out the lights, take a day trip-by bus (to the aquarium, a museum, etc…)
•	SEED members also made re-used newspaper flowers to show an alternative to buying bouquets.
•	Anna & Brianna will bring coffee mugs to next meeting as examples.

RHSA
•	Mental & Physical Health Month (February) budget passed. It will have lots of fun and varied activities (everything from scavenger hunts to massage), and prizes.

Announcements
•	“An Inconvenient Truth” will be showing in Ian’s Domain tomorrow at 8:30am, 12:30, 4:30, 7:30, & 9:15. Each showing is an hour and 35 minutes.
•	The movie will also show at 6:00 in Thomson 101, and Ariana is speaking before that one if you want to go see her.
•	Sierra Club Climate Summit: This is an event for college and high school students to receive training on how to help their schools reduce carbon emissions and lower their impact on the earth. The event is from February 2-4 (next weekend!!), there is information on the website http://www.ssc.org/states/wa.php. If you’re interested in going and getting a group rate with other members, Ariana (taylorstanley@gmail.com). Today is the last day to register.
•	Sierra Club is also tabling on the HUB lawn from 11-2 all this week if anyone feels like helping out or stopping by.

(Advertising)
•	Tim will send Ariana old SEED flyers for updating into new advertising, or he will bring a paper copy, or make something on the computer to send to Ariana.

9)	Advertising
10)	RHSA Report
11)	Announcements

Plate Day Counts
•	Counts for McMahon after plate day actually showed higher usage. One of the places offering to – go only was closed temporarily or completely during the counting, which is different than on plate day
•	It was concluded that the data from McMahon is not really great, and that to get valuable data for any of this, we would have needed to start before plate day and have it be day randomized. But we will continue with a plate count at 1101 this week.

Compostable Dishware
•	We looked at the to-go dishware to be phased in at 1101. (potato utensils, sugar cane box, corn acid bag with soy ink, and a corn acid cup that was not present)
•	SEED will work with HFS to advertise these products and educate the residents about what is compostable and what isn’t.
o	Ideas: posters, activities, door-to-door, present at hall councils, RA meetings
o	Should also get in touch with Michael Meyering to see what schedule HFS is on (i.e. when do we start making posters)
o	HFS advertising can help and make really cool professional posters.

Beach Walk Re-cap
•	Was fun, informative, and interesting. Lots of organisms.
•	To get more attendance in the future we could have pictures of what you can see on the beach, because people would go if they knew how cool it really is.

Valentines Day
•	Earth Club is selling recycled paper valentine with seeds in them, we can help them make the valentines and advertise them to the residents while we have our activity in dorms.
•	We will table at both ends of campus (McMahon and Terry/Lander). Tentative dates of Wednesday, February 7th (McMahon) and Thursday, February 8th from 11 – 2 pm both days.
•	We will have our demos that we’ve planned earlier and also maybe hand out newspaper flowers. There should also be a seed valentine example to promote, and also a revised version of their pamphlet.

Garden
•	No updates.

Light Bulbs
•	SEED has received notice that HFS has some compact fluorescent light bulbs that they would like students to exchange with their personal incandescent light bulbs, and that they would like SEED to organize this. These bulbs save a great deal of energy.
•	Ariana will tell them that we’ll do it, and ask how soon the light bulbs are available.
•	Ideas for how to accomplish:
o	Talk to RA’s, hall council, spread the word
o	Have hall events with food, music, movie, and light bulb exchanging. Can show a sci-fi futuristic disaster or educational film.
o	At the hall events, we should also make residents aware of what recyclables are, educate about compost (depending on HFS schedule).

Recycling Concerns on-Campus
•	The recycling bins around campus are not labeled clearly about what goes in them and what doesn’t. “Mixed Paper” is much too unclear for most students. We can send this item to Earth Club to see if they can take care of this.
•	Also, Terry hall has/had recycling bins to give away to residents. Residents would really benefit from having a recycling bin, so that it is as easy as taking out the trash. We might be able to get some free bins from UW recycling to provide for residents that want them (ask Tim). Bins should be different from trash cans in color or shape.
•	It would be particularly effective to give bins to clusters in McMahon, so perhaps we can make them an experiment.

Advertising
•	We need to start putting up the leaves in the dorms and finish decorating them. We have enough already for 1 per floor in Hagget, so Kate will give them to the office to put up.
•	The rest of the leaves will be decorated and ready for next meeting. Kate, Kirsten, Anna, and Marina have leaves. The information to go on them is: SEED, Students Expressing Environmental Eduacation (optional), Meetings: 5:30 pm on Tuesdays in McMahon Hall Pompeii Room, & “re-used leaf.”

RHSA
•	Mental Health Month will be in February. It will have lots of fun and varied activities (everything from scavenger hunts to massage), and prizes.
•	Winter Fest: This is a time when halls have fun events for residents from around campus.
•	They have also been working on a resolution about changing transgender housing in Stevens Court so that people can live with the gender they most identify with.

Announcements
•	Rainy Dawg Radio: Matt Dundas, who has a show on the station, wants to create an activism news program for his show and needs people to be on the air and gather news. There’s a facebook group for it (search: Don’t Listen to This Show), or you can email Matt at unflapped@hotmail.com
•	Sierra Club Climate Summit: This is an event for college and high school students to receive training on how to help their schools reduce carbon emissions and lower their impact on the earth. The event is from February 2-4 (next weekend!!), there is information on the website http://www.ssc.org/states/wa.php. If you’re interested in going and getting a group rate with other members, email me (annatree@u.washington.edu) or Ariana (taylorstanley@gmail.com).
•	Sierra Club is also tabling on the HUB lawn from 11-2 all next week if anyone feels like helping out or stopping by.
•	Earth Club is having an Environmental Poetry night at Trabant Chai Lounge, which is on 45th next to the Neptune Theater on Friday from 7 to 10 pm. There will be poets, musicians, and delicious chai.

9)	Announcements

Advertising Options
•	We need to advertise our club, we can table, have normal posters, and there are cut out leaves we can re-use as posters, or hand outs. The leaves can be hung from the wall in 3-D style or from a string so they move and stand out. Members wrote on the leaves during the meeting.

Snacks
•	It was decided to have snacks at the meeting and members signed up for a meeting to bring snacks. Snacks will be vegan-friendly.

Plate Day Re-cap
•	Thank you cards for the staff at McMahon 8 and Eleven01. Gretchen designed them, and members signed them. They will be delivered.
•	Plate counts still need to be conducted at McMahon 8 on Wednesday and Eleven01 on Thursday from 6:20 to 7:20. Anna and Gretchen volunteered.

MLK Day of Service Re-cap
•	Discussed. The Cheasty Greenspace event was well organized by EarthCorps, and had great turn out and great impact.

Beach walk
•	Will happen on January 18 (a Thursday night). Meet at Hillel, 50th and 17th (around Greek Row), at 7:30 pm. Carpool to South Alkali Beach to learn about what we will see and to walk out in the dark. Will return to Hillel around 11:30 pm or perhaps earlier.
•	Space is limited! (By carpool seats) Email Rachel to RSVP at ramathis@u.washington.edu. You can also email if you are confused about the location.

Garden
•	SEED wants to create a garden for residents to grow plants in.
•	SEED has created a garden space in the past; Tim gave a summary of the work with UW Grounds Department and HFS to create it.
•	Gretchen will talk with Rob White (Landscape Grounds Operations Manager) to discuss options.

Valentines Day
•	Tabling with sustainable holiday activity: Recycled Valentines Crafts (north campus), and information for students
o	Earth Club’s pamphlet of ideas relating to the Christmas and winter holidays will be revised, and either handed out or the information presented in some other form. Alisha and Anna have agreed to go over it.
o	Ideas for sustainable holiday activities generated at the meeting: take a romantic walk out to dinner, bake your Valentine cookies instead of buying chocolates, give him/her seeds or live plants instead of buying roses (high use of chemicals involved in the cut flowers industry), give a coffee mug (for reducing the waste of “to go” cups).
o	We can represent these ideas with demos and clear signs as we table, or represent them in some other way…perhaps singing, dressing up, or wearing the information.
•	Location: North Campus. Room not discussed.

Announcements
•	Hillel is having a Shabbat dinner on February 2, and would like a SEED person there to table and answer questions because the dinner will be themed around how to make their lives and Judaism more sustainable. Marina has volunteered to do this.
•	Sierra Club Climate Summit: This is an event for college and high school students to receive training on how to help their schools reduce carbon emissions and lower their impact on the earth. The event is from February 2-4, there is information on the website http://www.ssc.org/states/wa.php. If you’re interested in going and getting a group rate with other members, email me (annatree@u.washington.edu) or Ariana.
•	Earth Club is having an Environmental Poetry night at Trabant Chai Lounge, which is on 45th next to the Neptune Theater on January 26th from 7 to 10 pm. There will be poets, musicians, and delicious chai. There is still performance time available for artists if anyone is interested! Contact Ariana, or Earth Club if you are interested.

Eat on a Plate Day
•	This event will take place on Wednesday at McMahon 8, and Thursday at Eleven01. There will be a 25 cent discount to eat on a plate, and SEED will table from 5:30 to 7:30 pm in the dining areas on the specified day. SEED members have volunteered to staff the tables at these times.
•	In addition to encouraging participation by tabling, SEED may have a prize drawing for participants, or just have prizes available (recycled pencils…etc)
•	Posters were made after the meeting: one for each dining area, and one for the table.
•	Future ideas for action in this area: find a way to make the china plates available to customers at the salad bar.
•	Make sure people know where the plates go (dish conveyor belt) to make them feel more comfortable using the plates.
Compostable Dishware
•	Something exciting is happening in Eleven01. Compostable “tater-ware” is soon to appear and replace the plastic utensils. Compostable to go boxes, cups, and plates are also on the way. And composting units will hopefully find their way into the residence halls.
•	All that’s needed is a little work from SEED! We need to educate and motivate the student body, and help figure out the logistics of composting units in the residence halls.
o	Ideas on how to do this: Posters, facebook groups, email groups, street theater, exhibit showing a fork in stages of compost process.
Valentines Day – Sustainable Holiday
•	Tabling with sustainable holiday activity: Recycled Valentines Crafts (north campus)
o	SEED members should save any pretty paper or magazines they come across to use in this project. We will check in before the day to see progress. Other ideas are to ask for scraps from stores that gift-wrap and tell your friends.
o	Have sustainable holiday ideas pamphlet available at our event and at RHSA’s event (south campus - Lander). Will try to use Earth Club’s pamphlet about Christmas as a template to update.
o	Location: North Campus. Can we get access to the clear room that is in McMahon? Talk to Darcy.
•	Combine with Seeds for SEED program if can. (send seeds as valentines—see previous minutes)

Garden
•	Plan to create P-Patch type of garden on campus for residents. Will be a place for students to grow vegetables and flowers.
•	Rod White is the head grounds person, and wants to help this project. Tim will contact him.
•	SEED will find and area and prepare it by turning the soil and getting compost. Then there will be outreach to students in halls. Perhaps floors could adopt a plot to care for?
•	SEED was involved in a previous garden project that was/is successful. Herbs and tomatoes are used by HFS chefs.
Changes and Plans
•	SEED will be having a new meeting time this quarter. It is still in the process of being decided on, but will almost surely be on Tuesday or Wednesday evenings. It will also take place in a residence hall in North Campus. The exact room is not certain. We will email when the next meeting is as soon as a space can be scheduled.
•	We plan on recruiting new membership to SEED and increasing our club’s effectiveness. We have a firm plan with deadlines on how to accomplish this.
New Officers
•	Officer Elections took place at this meeting. The results are as follows:
o	Brianna Craft was elected to the position of RHSA Representative with a vote of 8 in favor and 0 opposed.
o	Francis Gaze was elected to the position of Historian with a vote of 8 in favor and 0 opposed.
o	Kristen Bales was elected to the position of Publicity Coordinator with a vote of 8 in favor and 0 opposed.
Announcements
•	Sierra Club Climate Summit: This is an event for college and high school students to receive training on how to help their schools reduce carbon emissions and lower their impact on the earth. The event is from February 2-4, there is information on the website http://www.ssc.org/.
•	Tree planting project on Saturday at Duwamish Greenbelt. 10 – 2 pm. Information at the project website: http://www.volunteersolutions.org/uwkc/org/opp/1513051.html

**Showing of “An Inconvenient Truth” next Wednesday!!**
Feel free to send me (zuchinicake@msn.com) input on any times that might be better for meetings next quarter.

OTM’s (Of The Months)
•	These are awards given to students, faculty, staff, events, and organizations connected to the residence halls. This includes SEED.
•	Ariana will write one for SEED as an organization for the month of November, and Anna will write one about our Veteran’s Day Clean-up
•	They can be submitted online at http://otms.nrhh.org/. (Use SEED address of: UW box 354470 McCarty 33413. UWseed@u.washington.edu is our email (does not go to members of the list).
Sponsoring “An Inconvenient Truth”
•	Even details: 6 pm, November 29 in Gowen 301. There will be some pizza, and also a panel afterward for discussion. (yes, there will be professors) Spread the word!
•	Tabling: Will go from 11 until 1:30 on Wednesday 29th in McMahon 8. Use of a table has been arranged, Ariana will set up, Anna will come later and help out. Beforehand, a cloth SEED banner will be made in McCarty leadership office (most likely, email me at zuchinicake@msn.com if you’d like to help) at 4 pm on Monday. During tabling we will hand out info about the movie showing, and we will also have information about SEED available.
•	Posters: We will be making posters to hang up around campus before the event. Location and time to be announced.
Meeting Times
•	Meeting attendance is down, and many other activities presently conflict with the SEED meeting time, therefore the meeting time could change. Members are asked to give input (we are currently entertaining the idea of Wednesday at the current 4:30 time, but nothing is set). The change will likely come next quarter, so keep that in mind.
SEED Goals for next quarter
•	Increase meeting attendance: more than 10 members present at every meeting.
•	Have plate day/s, and get at least 50 participants.
•	Have 7 or more events.

•	The tools (grabbers) were also good, but bags that look different for recycling and trash would make things easier.
•	Should we have a South Campus Cleanup? Yes, probably in spring sometime, maybe with Earthweek.
Re-usable Dishware
•	Poster Campaign for bringing your own dishes?
•	Have a day for Bring Your Own Plate at the dorms
-1 dorm at a time
-Lottery Prizes. Take mailing info when show own plate, then can leave prizes with residence hall desks. Ideas: biodegradable detergent, scrubbie, coffee mug (we like this one)
-Will be all day, but lottery in evening.
-During 2nd week of January so we have time to prepare. 10th and 11th? Will pass out leaflets from scratch paper day before, and post a large poster in the hall, maybe write on to go boxes.
-Might be able to get some facts for posters/leaflets from the HFS waste audit reports
•	Help Earth Club with their Bring Your own mug event
•	Sponsor the showing of An Inconvenient Truth by Pi Sigma Alpha, November 29. Find out what sponsoring might mean. (set-up, clean-up, name prescence?)
•	The climate refugee/human rights activist Omoyele Sowore is coming to UW on November 20th. Sierra Club is sponsoring, and SEED could sponsor as well. He will be in Smith 120 starting at 7 pm. We will look into sponsoring.
•	Information: Our Adviser is Darcy, she is in McMahon
•	Other potential issues to address: Light bulbs in dorms, try to switch to energy efficient LED fluorescent? Cloth towels in bathrooms to keep down paper towel waste? (hand dryers not an option because of noise)
